How to read WhatsApp messages without blue ticks — I think everyone has wondered this at some point. Sometimes you just need a moment before you reply. Maybe you’re at work, maybe you need to think, or maybe you simply don’t have the energy for a long conversation right now. That’s not rude, it’s normal. Here are the ways that actually work, and the one “trick” I’d skip.
Method 1: Turn Off Read Receipts
- Open WhatsApp → Settings.
- Tap Privacy.
- Switch off Read receipts.
Now people will see two grey ticks (delivered) instead of blue ticks (read).
| Good to know | Details |
|---|---|
| It works both ways | You also won’t see when others read your messages. |
| Groups still show it | Read receipts in group chats can’t be turned off. |
| Voice notes still show it | When you play a voice message, the sender still sees it was played. |
| Online status is separate | People can still see you’re “online” unless you change that too (below). |
Hide “online” and last seen too
In Settings → Privacy → Last seen and online, set Last seen to Nobody or My contacts, and set “Who can see when I’m online” to Same as last seen. Otherwise someone may notice you were online and wonder why you didn’t reply.
Method 2: Read From Your Notifications
If you want to keep read receipts on for everyone else, just read the message in the notification bar. Swipe down, and expand the notification to see the full message. As long as you don’t open the chat, the ticks stay grey.
Method 3: Long-Press to Preview (iPhone)
On iPhone, press and hold a chat in your chat list. A preview of the latest messages pops up. Let go without tapping into it, and the messages usually stay unread. Scroll carefully though — tapping the preview opens the chat.
What I’d Avoid
You’ll also see the airplane-mode trick online (turn on airplane mode, read, close WhatsApp, turn it back off). It’s unreliable — the receipt can still be sent once you reconnect — so I don’t count on it. And while we’re on privacy, it’s worth knowing the common WhatsApp scam warning signs too.
Common Questions
If I turn read receipts back on, will people see old messages as read?
Messages you read while receipts were off generally stay grey for the sender. New messages you read after switching back on will show blue.
Why can I still see blue ticks from some people?
If your own read receipts are off, you shouldn’t see blue ticks in one-to-one chats. You will still see them in groups.
Can the other person tell I turned off read receipts?
WhatsApp doesn’t send a notification. They may just notice your ticks always stay grey.
I keep read receipts off most of the time now, and I’ve found it takes a lot of pressure out of messaging. People get a reply when I’m ready to give a proper one. If you like having more control over your WhatsApp, you might also like using a WhatsApp username instead of your number, and my fix for voice messages that won’t play.
