WhatsApp voice message not playing is such a frustrating little problem. Someone sends you a long voice note, you press play, and… nothing. Or the line moves but there’s no sound. Or it plays so quietly you can barely hear it. It happened to me with a voice note from my mother, and of course that’s the one you don’t want to miss. After trying everything, I found it’s almost always one of a few simple things.
Quick Checks First
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Media volume | Voice notes use media volume. Your ringer can be loud while media is on zero. |
| Bluetooth | The sound may be going to earbuds in your bag or your car. |
| Internet connection | A voice note must download fully before it can play. |
| Phone storage | If storage is full, the download can fail silently. |
If It Plays but There’s No Sound
1. Raise media volume while it’s playing
Press play, then press the volume-up button straight away. That way you’re changing the right volume.
2. Check the proximity sensor
WhatsApp is clever: when you hold the phone to your ear, it switches voice notes to the small earpiece speaker. The sensor sits at the top of the screen. A thick screen protector, a case edge or even your hand can trick it into thinking the phone is at your ear. Try holding the phone flat and away from you. If you’re unsure whether your screen protector is the cause, I wrote about what a screen protector actually does.
3. Turn off Bluetooth for a moment
Swipe down and switch Bluetooth off, then play the voice note again.
4. Check the speaker itself
Play a YouTube video. If that’s silent too, the problem is your phone’s speaker or volume, not WhatsApp.
If the Voice Message Won’t Download or Load
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and try again.
- Free up storage. My guide to clearing WhatsApp storage without deleting chats is the quickest way.
- Check auto-download settings: WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download → make sure Audio is ticked.
- Check permissions (Android): Phone Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Permissions. Make sure storage/media and microphone are allowed.
If Nothing Works
- Update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
- Restart your phone. Boring, but it fixes more than you’d think.
- Clear the cache (Android only): Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage → Clear cache.
- Ask the sender to resend it. Occasionally the file itself is damaged.
Common Questions
Why does the voice note play quietly?
Usually because it’s playing through the earpiece instead of the loudspeaker. Hold the phone away from your face and check nothing is covering the top of the screen.
Why does it stop when I lift the phone?
That’s the proximity sensor switching speakers. Keep the phone steady or play it at your ear like a call.
Can I speed up or slow down voice notes?
Yes. While it’s playing, tap the 1x button next to it to switch between 1x, 1.5x and 2x.
For me it was the Bluetooth. My earbuds were in their case in my bag, still connected, and my mother’s voice note was playing quietly to nobody. If your phone has been acting up in other ways too, my post about that “is my phone about to die” feeling might help.
