What a Screen Protector Actually Protects Against
Tempered glass protectors are genuinely good at absorbing impact from a drop — that’s their main job, and mine did exactly that. They’re also good at stopping everyday scratches from keys or sand in a pocket, which is the more common, boring damage most screens actually get over time.
What It Won’t Do
It’s not invincible — a hard enough drop, at the wrong angle, on the wrong surface, can still crack the actual screen even with a protector on. It reduces the odds significantly, but “reduces” is the honest word, not “eliminates.” It’s also worth knowing a scratched protector can sometimes look like a scratched screen from a glance — if you’re not sure which one is damaged, a fingernail test at the edge usually tells you.
What to Look For in a Screen Protector
- 9H hardness rating — this is the standard for tempered glass and what you want, not the softer plastic film alternatives.
- A pack of 2-3 rather than a single one, since installation bubbles or small dust specks under the glass are common on the first try.
- Case-friendly edges if you also use a case, so the two don’t fight each other at the corners.
Worth It?
For a few dollars, yes — it’s the cheapest insurance you can put on a phone, and unlike most insurance, you’ll actually see the moment it does its job.
